Hack, cough, wheeze
So, I have a fever. I know, I know, I should be home, but I have two interviews with job candidates and I am not willing to NOT have a say in them. I also feel that being within 5 feet of me will NOT give people the bubonic plague, despite their feelings on the topic. I work with a bunch of germ-phobes and while I understand the need for hygiene, I think that people’s understanding of disease vectors needs some work.
So sadly, I will not be able to do six workouts for triathlon this week. I’m bummed about that, but I wasn’t willing to swim today and I don’t think that I’ll be able to run tomorrow—in fact I probably won’t leave the house tomorrow. I don’t mind staying home, though I hate to waste a sick day on days that I am sick.
Earlier this week, I saw the most amazing exchange on the subway. There was a teenager listening to what looked like an Ipod, except it was a radio and he was listening without headphones. A woman was standing in front of him and was questioning him about it. Her questions were asked with no hint of anger, irony or sarcasm.
Her: I like that. Does it come with headphones?
Him: Huh, uh no.
Her: It’s a little loud, I’ve seen it in the store. I think that it might come with headphones.
Him: Mumble mumble
Her: You should check into it, I bet that you could get headphones for it.
She gets the Tony for best Actress in a role on the F train. I admire that kind of cool. I have none of that.

I had a room mate in the 80’s who used to blast Duran Duran. I hate loud music, so one night rather than confronting her, I just kindly gifted her with a lovely pair of headphones. She wasn’t offended and there was no discussion. And for me happily there was NO MORE ‘HUNGRY LIKE THE WOOOLF-F-F-F-F-F”

I love headphones simply because I can blast the music as loud as I damn well please and no one has to be the wiser. Unless, of course, I start singing along like an idiot. There’s no help for people like me.

I still have my cd walkman w/ headphones though I rarely use it. Headphones=good. Also, sorry you’re sick. Sounds like what Red had - some mysterious nonspecific fever with allergy symptoms.

Is it wrong that I wanted that story to end with a shooting? ‘Cause I did. Also, feel better soon!
