Deserving
Yesterday was a crazy day. I love the early summer days, when there is plenty of daylight, when the local outdoor pool is open and free of charge and when I’m feeling strong.
The great and generous R agreed to watch my bike, so I was able to ride 20 miles and run 3.3 miles. I did it at a very moderate pace (total of 2 hours 10 minutes). Like I told R, I don’t believe in exercising myself too much.
In contrast, eliz came out a little later to do the same workout. It took her 15-20 minutes less than it took me…and she felt like dying at the end. I’m trying to avoid that sensation until race day. Our goals are really different–I want to beat my previous time of 3:48, if only by a few minutes. E wants to come as close to 3 hours as possible…3:15 is very realistic for her. She just bought a new beautiful Felt bike to give herself every advantage.
I was feeling fine in the afternoon, so I went to the public pool at Red Hook. It’s a segregated pool; the black and Latino kids and families were clustered in the main part of the pool–there were around 200 of them angling for space.
In the lap swim area there are about 20 mostly white people swimming laps and negotiating rules. I swam for about half an hour and came out. The people who mystify me are the young posers trying to look cool. The women are in their cute teeny bikinis and the guys are showing off their super-cool tattoos. They are taking the sun on the cement deck–no chairs allowed, only white tshirts allowed. “Hey, kids…doing that act at the free-open-to-the-public Red Hook pool makes you look sad and pathetic…NOT COOL!” These people need to go to the Hamptons and be poseurs there.
Today I did another 4 miles. I should probably swim again, but I think that I deserve some rest. Right?
