The Amazing R@ce, Brooklyn style
This weekend I rode 23 miles, swam 1300 meters and ran just under 7 miles. It doesn’t feel like enough, but it’ll have to do the trick. I’m supposed to taper this week and be sure to be rested enough for the race.
I will definitely be able to run two more times and swim and test the wetsuit. I should make it my business to ride Wednesday night, if only just for 10 miles. I’m not sure that I’ll make it. I always feel as though the “rest” aspect is the most important factor the week of a race.
Yesterday, for the first time this summer, I swam at Sunset Park. The lap lanes are 55 yards and I love that I don’t have to spend a lot of time turning around. Watching the families in the park is also a lot of fun. There are dads teaching their daughters to play soccer, dads teaching their sons to catch a softball and older sisters teaching younger ones how to hula.
Because the neighborhood is mostly Mexican, there are lots of vendors of the foods I adore. I resisted the temptation to buy coconut and contented myself with a ripe and perfect mango to eat on my ride home. It helped me resist the Mr. Softee trucks and the piraguas/frío frío/icee carts.
I had a bit of mango left when I got home so I cut it into my scallops as I seared them. I am pleased to report that scallops with garlic, mango and a light fresh-blended tomato sauce over pasta tastes yummy.
I am also thrilled to report that I have set a vacation with H on Nantuck3t for late August. I’ll be counting the days until I vacate.

I like that you accidentally typed run instead of fun in the 3rd paragraph of this entry. I don’t think it’s a Freudian slip that I would’ve made. ; )

Re: the mango in the scallops, that sounds so delicious. I want some. NOW!
Re: Vacation with H. on Nantucket: I am very, very jealous.
Re: the race training, good luck! The pool manager, after watching me do laps today, was trying to convince me to do an open water race. Apparently there was one in the lake in the next town. I realized when she was talking about it, that that’s the thing that scares me the most about a tri — swimming in open water with a crowd of people.

Busy, busy, busy! And here I thought I was awesome when I walked 4.5 miles over 2 days, finishing off with an ice cream sundae at McDonold’s today! I love Mexican food too. Not much around in these parts. Wah!

I am getting so excited for you! Do you have a race number yet?

Good luck with both the “rest” and the upcoming race. The scallops sound wonderful. I don’t suppose you’d fed ex me one, would you?
