Run home before it dries

On Monday, I came into work and my boss congratulated me.

Me: Thanks.

Her: Where’s the medal?

Me: Um…it’s at home.

Her: But I’m very disappointed–I thought you’d wear it today.

Me:  Well…I…could bring it in tomorrow.

[next day]

Me: Hi–I brought the medal in (passing it towards her).

Her:  NO!! [me being confused]  I want you to wear it!  Put it on…Yeah, doesn’t that look nice.  Well, I hope you have them displayed in a prominent me.

Me:  Actually, I’m not sure where the other ones are.

The finisher’s medal is a mystery to me.  I can’t understand why someone would buy or sell one on ebay. While running the marathon is fun and challenging, the medal doesn’t represent anything to be.  Getting muscled legs is wonderful, breathing easier is fun, increasing endurance is the best…but the medal doesn’t symbolize those things for me.  I wonder if other people like their medals/plaques and trophies more than I do.

  1. IMHO it is assanine (sp?) selling or buying a medal like that. The medals in my house respresent something to me (don’t ask me where they all are though), just like the pictures of the events, I could not simply sell them. However I would have no problem giving them to a charity perhaps, but not sell them. After all, it’s the memories that made it so special, not the medal.

But why, unless you lost your original one, would you want to buy a medal you didn’t earn is beyond me.

Actually, you seem very sane and rational to me. Like RR says, why would anyone want a medal they didn’t earn? All that matters is that you accomplished what you set out to do.

i was wondering what i would do with marathon finishers’ medals, and all i could think of is the folder i keep dog stuff in to assure future landlords or whoever that the dog is tractable. imagine cranky’s references including “and i finished three marathons: here are the medals.” at the startled response, you could say, “a person who exercises is happier, calmer, and has a better memory. it shows that i can accomplish large projects.” of course all that is true. maybe you need one of those ribbon covered things military people wear when they are displaying multiple medals on their chests.

Some people need physical reminders of what they can do/have done. Maybe those buying it on ebay are trying to impress someone. But if you don’t care about it, why not take advantage of the idiots and sell yours on ebay? You might be able to recoup your entry fees.

Naaaaa, mine are just hanging on the back of my doornob in my closet.

If I wore a medal to work after a marathon, I would use it as a source of comedy, mainly because even though I’d be proud of having it, I’d also be embarrassed that everyone was all excited about it.

Could you wear it as a thong? Just an idea…might liven up the watercooler conversation.
