Poca
Earlier this morning the running team and I went out and did our 5 miles in the rain. The weather is very mild and the wind hasn’t picked up yet, so it was a great run. Just before mile 4, E said, “Hey, Poca[cranky], do you want to do a slow Indian run?”
R dubbed me Poca[ ] in the summer when I finally agreed to Indian run with them. I have a checkered history with those runs. An indian run is when a line of people (3 or more) jogs in a single file line. It begins when the last person in line sprints to the front. When that person gets there, the next person at the end of the line sprints to the front of the line, etc. When we ran with the large training group, everyone in the “slow” team used to sprint ahead and leave me in the dust.
After much snarling and unpleasantness [shocking!] from me last summer, E and R agreed to do “slow Indian” and it’s a great way to do speedwork. Today, we did our last mile a couple of minutes faster than the other miles even though there was an uphill incline involved.
I’m finding it a great relief to be able to run during these days. After training for the marathon all summer, running 8-10 miles a week feels paltry. Feeling the weight accumulate around my belly is awful.
Tomorrow we have another run scheduled. Yes!

I did a slow Indian once. But I don’t think we’re talking about the same thing.
