MINE…all MINE
I was just in BN looking for Richard Price’s new book, Lush Life. I looked for the book, and couldn’t find it and so went to the info desk to inquire. As I had feared, the book was not in stock. The info women said, “There were three of them when we opened, but I think that they are gone.”
I , of course, was crushed on the rocks of despair because I had been thinking of starting to read the book today and I was not pleased with the idea of having to wait. I browsed around for a few minutes when the young black woman from the info desk approached me. “You might want to hang around for a few minutes,” she whispered, “there’s a guy sitting on the floor reading that book–maybe he’ll put it back.
I sulked, “Someone’s sitting on the floor reading MY BOOK?”
“Maybe he’ll put it back,” she reminded me.
So I stood around 10 feet north of the guy and she stood about 6 feet east of him–the three of us formed a little “L” while I waited to see what he would do…and sure enough…he BOUGHT THE BOOK!
She came over to condole, “I did my best,” she said.
It’s true–no one at BN has ever done more for me. So even though I ended up with a different book and Mr. Amazon will be delivering Lush Life at another time…I’m ALMOST satisfied. It’s an annoying thing to live in a place where people read.

If she was really helpful, she would have gone over to the guy, told him he couldn’t read the book for free, kicked him in the nuts and given the book to you. Don’t you live in NYC? Is that town going soft or something??!!

The average guy, reading? The nerve.

Took my daughter (7) to Waldenbooks yesterday…she saw people sitting on the floor reading…she asked “Mom, is this a library?”
