Run home before it dries

November 8, 2007

On Monday, I came into work and my boss congratulated me.
Me: Thanks.
Her: Where’s the medal?
Me: Um…it’s at home.
Her: But I’m very disappointed–I thought you’d wear it today.
Me:  Well…I…could bring it in tomorrow.
[next day]
Me: Hi–I brought the medal in (passing it towards her).
Her:  NO!! [me being confused]  I want you to wear it!  Put it on…Yeah, [...]

A little more

November 6, 2007

Here I am with R and some random Scottish guy.  We are running through my neighborhood at about mile 7.
My legs are a bit better today. It’s still quite a challenge to walk downstairs, especially to the subway, but I am more AWAKE!  My boss insisted that I bring my finisher’s medal in today and [...]

Report

November 5, 2007

R and I took the bus at 5:30AM.  This year the bus practically flew to Staten Island and we were there just after 6.  Four hours to wait.  R has been sick and after a little while she burrowed into her sleeping bag, zipped it up and disappeared. My main improvement this year was bringing [...]

Last 10

October 28, 2007

I’m back after a few days away. R and I did the last 10 miles of the NY marathon course this morning. It’s the third time we’ve both done this run and it was the best.  We both felt blase about the whole thing, which was exciting given that last year I stopped after about [...]

Post-20

October 15, 2007

It’s been a relatively good day, but I’m looking forward to going home and putting my feet up.  Considering that I ran 20 miles yesterday, I don’t feel bad–just ready for a rest.  Yesterday we got a ride home from an acquaintance, who was still hanging around the finish because her leg at cramped up [...]

The 20 are done

October 14, 2007

I am pleased to report that the 20 miles are behind me.  They weren’t particularly hard for 20 miles, but 20 miles is always tough (we did 6.9 miles before a half-marathon race).  I did the 1/2 marathon route slower than last year (13:20/mile compared with 12:45) and that made a big difference. The weather [...]

The Biggest Winner

October 3, 2007

The days after a long run are interesting to me.  I get up and step on the scale and note that I have gained a pound.  Today I am up two pounds compared to Sunday morning.
Yes, folks it’s true.  Any run longer than 13 miles puts the weight on.  Maybe it’s fluid…maybe it’s from eating [...]

18 Miles

September 30, 2007

The run is over and I’m pleased with the results. I did the 18 miles in just under a 13:10 per mile pace.  R and I did the first 12 miles together and the last 6 miles separately and she finished about 10-15 minutes ahead of me.
R found it to be a tough race because [...]

Five weeks to go

September 29, 2007

I am free for the weekend. Today is my day of rest in preparation for tomorrow’s projected 18 miles.
18 miles…three times around Central Park.  It’s a race sponsored by ING as the marathon tune-up.  The car will be picking us up at 5:30AM.  I just hope to finish close to the 4 hour mark and [...]

Marathon training REALLY starts

August 11, 2007

This morning R and I did a 10 mile run.  The foul heat and humidity finally broke, and we took advantage of the relatively cooler dry temperatures to do most of our run over the Brooklyn Bridge and back.
There were hundreds of tourists clogging the bridge and we were both feeling slow, but it was [...]
